Honda CB650R E-Clutch Launched in India at Rs. 9.60 Lakh

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has officially launched the CB650R E-Clutch in India, priced at ₹9.60 lakh (ex-showroom). This marks a significant step forward in mid-weight motorcycle innovation, combining refined aesthetics with cutting-edge semi-automatic clutch technology aimed at enhancing the riding experience without compromising on performance.

What is the E-Clutch

The standout feature of this model is Honda’s E-Clutch system a first-of-its-kind offering in the Indian market. This technology allows riders to shift gears without using the clutch lever, both while upshifting and downshifting. The clutch lever is still present, giving riders the freedom to operate manually if preferred. It’s essentially a hybrid between a quickshifter and a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), delivering the best of both mechanical engagement and electronic convenience.

Engine and Performance

At its core, the CB650R remains powered by the tried-and-tested 648.72cc, liquid-cooled, inline-four-cylinder engine that churns out 85.82 bhp at 12,000 rpm and 57.5 Nm at 8,500 rpm. It’s mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Despite the addition of the E-Clutch, Honda has retained the pure character of the inline-four motor known for its smooth power delivery, linear torque curve, and high-revving nature.

Hardware and Components

The new CB650R E-Clutch continues with high-end hardware components, making it a solid choice for enthusiasts:

  • Suspension: Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks at the front and a preload-adjustable monoshock at the rear.
  • Braking: Dual 310mm front discs with Nissin radial calipers and a 240mm rear disc, assisted by dual-channel ABS.
  • Tyres: 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 120/70 front and 180/55 rear tubeless radial tyres.

Electronics and Features

Apart from the innovative E-Clutch system, the bike features a full digital instrument cluster, LED lighting, and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), which offers better traction and confidence during spirited riding. It also comes with an Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) for added safety during sudden braking.

Design and Styling

The CB650R E-Clutch retains the Neo Sports Café design language a signature aesthetic that blends retro charm with a modern, aggressive silhouette. The sculpted fuel tank, minimalist tail section, and exposed engine add to its premium appeal. It is available in two colour options in India: Matt Gunpowder Black Metallic and Candy Chromosphere Red.

Segment Positioning

At ₹9.60 lakh, the CB650R E-Clutch sits in a unique space. While it’s not cheap, it offers something no other mid-weight naked bike does clutchless convenience without losing rider control. It targets riders upgrading from 300–400cc bikes who want performance and refinement, but also seek modern riding aids and advanced usability.

Final Verdict

The launch of the CB650R E-Clutch isn’t just about introducing a new variant it’s about redefining rider-machine interaction. Honda has taken an already excellent motorcycle and made it more accessible, intuitive, and technically superior. While purists may prefer traditional clutches, the E-Clutch offers a compelling reason to make the switch especially for city riding and long-distance touring.
